Concentration

My concentration shows pictures of Pakistan through a photojournalistic style. I wanted to explore what beauty truly is and how that “beauty” can be defined as endless possibilities.I showed a very realistic view of the country in a beautiful yet raw way. Pakistan is a unique place distinct from  American culture; therefore, I highlighted subjects that are outside of the norm for Americans. I was inspired by Art Wolfe’s Moments of Life; he captured different cultures and  day to day activities.

Born in Pakistan, I have seen the stereotypes that are attached to the culture. Most people have a dirty or dangerous impression of my country; however I have seen it differently. Pakistan has always been to me about the culture and the people. In the beginning, I wanted to show the beautiful parts of the country. However, I realized that it was naive of me to only show such a slim portion of my country. Pakistan is a developing country with many real issues that hinder its people daily, so I didn't want to glorify the country in a way to manipulate my viewers in seeing only the good. So I changed my perspective;I started to explore what beauty truly is. Most of my  photos have minimal editing done to them to truly showcase the raw beauty of the country and how diverse it is from American culture.Through my concentration, I tried to depict day to day activities. For example slides 1, 2 and 8 show young vendors trying to make as much money they can. I wanted to show these subjects in an eye grabbing way that people who are not usually interested can see the beauty and realize how diverse Pakistan can be, like in slides 9, 10, 11 and 12 showing the architecture of the country.
